George Dodge was a man who lived through the Civil War and the Great Depression. He thinks that the Great Depression wasn't as bad as the Civil War. He says, "We hear a great deal of fussing about how hard times are these days but it isn't half as bad as when I was young. Why this depression is nothing compared with the depression right after the Civil War. In 1876 there were the hardest times I ever saw. That was THE great depression..." He was a Yankee odd-job man and it seemed like he liked that. He liked masonry as well. He was very fond of his dog after his wife died and he never wanted to replace his wife with a housekeeper even if it would save money.

I think that George Dodge was a man of character. He seemed to live through some hard times and I think it made his character all the more exciting. I think that he needed that one person in his life to keep him company because first he had his wife and then when she passed away he looked to his dog for company.
